The European Union is preparing to introduce new legislative initiatives aimed at regulating social media usage for minors. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the formal proposal is scheduled for release following the summer break.

The primary objective of this initiative is to protect adolescents from the harmful effects of social media algorithms and ensure their safety within the digital environment. According to von der Leyen, the focus will be on restricting access for children and fostering an environment conducive to the healthy development of the younger generation.

A report by an EU expert group on minor safety in the digital space suggests prohibiting access for children under 13 until companies can definitively prove their platforms are safe for young users. Furthermore, member states will be granted the authority to implement additional restrictions based on age-specific considerations for adolescents.

These measures are designed to establish a unified regulatory framework across European Union member states and significantly enhance the protection of children's rights in the digital landscape.
