A Seoul court has sentenced Kim Keon Hee, the wife of South Korea’s former president, to seven years in prison. According to the Associated Press, the ruling stems from her systematic acceptance of expensive gifts from individuals who sought to leverage her influence to resolve business and political matters.

Investigations revealed that over a period of time, Kim Keon Hee accepted valuable offerings from entrepreneurs, religious figures, and former officials.

The court identified several instances of influence-peddling. A construction company executive gifted the former first lady jewelry valued at approximately 43.4 million tenge in exchange for help in securing a government appointment for his son-in-law. A robotics entrepreneur provided gifts hoping to gain support for a robotic dog project, while a pastor sought a position in an official diplomatic delegation. The list of donors also included a former head of the National Education Commission and a former prosecutor who aimed to secure support for his parliamentary bid.

Consequently, the court ordered the confiscation of all illicit gifts. These include a Van Cleef & Arpels diamond necklace, a Tiffany brooch, a Dior handbag, a gold turtle figurine in a display case, and a painting by renowned Korean-Japanese artist Lee Ufan.

While Kim Keon Hee acknowledged receiving the items, she categorically rejected the prosecution’s corruption charges. She argued that the gifts were purely personal and entirely unrelated to any quid pro quo or the provision of political favors.
