A groundbreaking 30-year study tracking nearly 150,000 healthcare professionals has revealed that combining regular strength training with cardiovascular exercise can slash the risk of premature death by up to 45%.

According to the research, hitting the optimal fitness sweet spot requires 90 to 120 minutes of weekly resistance training paired with 150 minutes of aerobic activity like walking, running, or swimming. While cardio alone reduces mortality risks significantly, adding just two short weightlifting sessions per week triggers a massive compound effect, cutting neurological death risks -including dementia - by 27% and fatal cardiovascular events by 19%.

This life-extending power stems from muscle tissue acting as the body's primary metabolic engine, absorbing roughly 80% of post-meal blood glucose to shield against type 2 diabetes and releasing anti-inflammatory proteins called myokines. Notably, the study also found that targeted resistance training for under an hour a week provided the most significant protection against cancer-related mortality. Furthermore, maintaining physical power—such as grip strength - acts as a vital clinical marker for preventing debilitating falls and fractures in older adults, guaranteeing an active and independent retirement.

Experts emphasize that more is not always better, as lifting weights for over two hours a week yields no additional longevity benefits. Ultimately, this observational study proves that expensive gym memberships are entirely unnecessary; brief, twice-weekly home resistance workouts paired with daily walking are fully sufficient to secure a longer, healthier life.
