The legal troubles surrounding former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol have intensified significantly. According to Yonhap, special prosecutors have petitioned the Seoul High Court to overturn the previous ruling and impose a death sentence on the former leader.

In December 2024, a lower court sentenced Yoon to life imprisonment for his attempt to declare martial law. However, the prosecution argues that this sentence is excessively lenient. Prosecutors maintain that the former head of state's actions constituted a grave crime against the nation's constitutional order.

The appellate proceedings had been suspended for a month after Yoon expressed distrust in the judicial panel. The Supreme Court, however, dismissed this motion, allowing the process to continue.

The prosecution is also seeking harsher penalties for his associates. Specifically, they have requested that the 30-year sentence previously handed to former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun be increased to life imprisonment.

It is worth noting that this is not the only legal battle facing the former president. He was previously sentenced to 30 years in prison for allegedly attempting to provoke a conflict with the DPRK by deploying unmanned aerial vehicles. Currently, the fate of Yoon Suk Yeol hangs in the balance as the court deliberates between life imprisonment and the death penalty.
