Lionel Messi has set a new record in the history of the FIFA World Cup. Lionel Messi has become the all-time top scorer in the history of the FIFA World Cup.

 Argentina's national team defeated the Austrian team 2-0 in the second round of Group J, with the 38-year-old forward scoring both goals. Thus, Messi has brought his tally of goals in World Cups to 18, surpassing the record previously held by former German national team striker Miroslav Klose (16 goals). The match took place in Arlington, USA.

 Prior to this, Messi scored a hat-trick in the match against Algeria, reaching 16 goals in World Cups and equaling Klose's record. After the brace in the game against Austria, the Argentine footballer improved his personal record. Currently, one of the players who could approach this record is Kylian Mbappé. The French national team striker has scored 16 goals in World Cups.
