The European Union has imposed a €200 million fine on the Chinese e-commerce marketplace Temu for failing to ensure consumer safety and allowing the proliferation of illegal products on its platform, BBC reports.

According to the findings of an investigation conducted by European regulatory bodies, Temu failed to properly fulfill its obligations to analyze and assess systemic risks on its platform. Independent expert inspections proved that the marketplace was utilized to sell charging devices that did not comply with electrical safety standards, as well as children's toys containing excessively high levels of hazardous chemicals.

Under the enforced sanction, Temu's management is required not only to pay the fine but also to submit an official action plan to rectify the identified violations by August 28 of this year.

In turn, Temu's leadership stated that they disagree with the European Commission's decision and consider the imposed fine to be groundless. Company representatives argued that the audit results were based on 2024 data and do not reflect the current state of the platform's security system. Currently, the marketplace's legal department is exploring options to appeal the decision.

According to official data, this is not the first legal dispute involving the brand. Previously, in 2025, a class-action lawsuit was filed against the Temu platform in the United States over allegations of unlawful distribution of users' personal data. Notably, in the market of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Temu remains one of the largest entities paying Value Added Tax (VAT) among international internet platforms.
