Newly Discovered Monkey Species Identified in the Congolese Rainforest (PHOTO)

Scientists have documented a previously unknown primate species inhabiting the tropical rainforests of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Known scientifically as Colobus congoensis, this distinct primate is called "Likweli" by local communities.

Confirming the existence of the species required nearly two decades of field research. Although the initial photographic evidence was captured in 2008, it took a comprehensive dataset of 114 field sightings gathered between 2018 and 2022 to officially verify it as a separate species. The findings were formally published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal PLOS One.

Genetic testing conducted by researchers at Florida Atlantic University reveals that this species diverged from its closest evolutionary relatives approximately 4 to 5 million years ago. Physical characteristics of Colobus congoensis include distinct pale markings across its face, a crest of upright hair, and striking pinkish-orange lips. Additionally, field recordings indicate that its vocalizations and acoustic profile are entirely unique among known primates.

Researchers emphasize that the species occupies a very limited geographic range of roughly 1,700 square kilometers. Due to habitat loss from deforestation and ongoing threats from illegal hunting, the newly identified primate is considered vulnerable. Conservationists are calling for swift protective measures to safeguard its habitat and secure its survival.
