Tokyo’s Casual Summer Dress Code Sparks "Leg Hair Harassment" Controversy

In response to extreme summer heatwaves, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government expanded its "Tokyo Cool Biz" policy, encouraging employees to ditch traditional suits for shorts, t-shirts, and sneakers, reports BBC.Spearheaded by Governor Yuriko Koike, the initiative aims to reduce energy consumption and ease the strain on air conditioning systems.

However, the policy has ignited a fierce debate over corporate norms. A survey by Gorilla Clinic found that 53.5% opposed shorts in the office compared to 46.5% in favor. Many female workers voiced aesthetic discomfort regarding exposed male legs, fueling the viral social media trend known as "sunehara" (short for "leg hair harassment").

The issue has also exposed severe gender double standards within Japanese workplace culture. Despite the scorching 40°C heat, unwritten corporate etiquette still expects women to wear full pantyhose, making the new casual privilege for men feel strikingly unfair. Facing awkwardness and peer pressure, a significant surge of male employees are now seeking laser hair removal -not out of vanity, but to maintain office decorum and avoid making colleagues uncomfortable.
