YouTube Demonetizes Low-Quality AI Content

YouTube has updated its monetization policies to curb the spread of low-quality, AI-generated videos commonly known as "slop." Effective July 16, the video platform will no longer allow channels to monetize mass-produced or templated content created solely through algorithms without meaningful human input. However, YouTube is not banning AI entirely - creators who use artificial intelligence as an assistive tool to deliver original commentary, unique educational value, or personalized scripting will still remain eligible for the YouTube Partner Program.

To protect the platform from automated "content farms," YouTube has targeted three main categories of demonetized content:

• Templated and Repetitive Videos: Fully automated AI slide shows, repetitive generated plots, and videos made without significant human creative effort.

• Shocking or Emotionally Manipulative Content: Clickbait designed purely for engagement, including sensationalized AI compilations, fake news about celebrity deaths or disasters, and staged distress scenarios.

• AI-Generated Experts: Virtual AI avatars offering advice on critical life topics such as medicine, law, finance, or politics (e.g., "AI doctors" or "AI financial advisors").

Rather than reviewing individual videos in isolation, YouTube moderators will evaluate entire channels by assessing their overall topic, top-performing uploads, titles, descriptions, and thumbnails. If the majority of a channel's output relies on policy-violating AI generation, the entire account risks removal from the monetization program. YouTube emphasized that the ultimate goal is not to discourage creative AI usage, but to dismantle spammy content farms flooding the platform for quick ad revenue.
