The UK Fully Transitions to Digital Visas (eVisa)

The United Kingdom has officially finalized its shift to the eVisa system, completely phasing out traditional physical visa stickers in passports. According to the official UK government portal, all immigration details for foreign nationals are now stored exclusively in a digital database.

As part of this rollout, the UK Home Office and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) have ceased issuing paper visa vignettes. Moving forward, all newly approved entry permits and immigration statuses are granted solely in an electronic format.

While the system has been expanding gradually since 2018 and is already used by millions of people, the government emphasizes that digital records provide significantly higher security. Unlike paper documents, eVisas cannot be lost, stolen, or forged. Additionally, the digital framework streamlines status verification for border control, employers, and landlords, allowing real-time online checks.

Requirements for Travelers and Status Holders

• New Applicants: Individuals whose visa applications are approved receive an accompanying document to complete the eVisa setup. They must follow the provided instructions and visit a visa application center to finalize the process.

• Existing Status Holders: Anyone holding a prior physical status was required to set up a UKVI account and link their eVisa directly to their current passport.

• Pre-Travel Verification: Travelers are strongly advised to log into their UKVI online account to confirm their visa details before embarking on a journey.

Border Controls and Technical Recommendations

Airlines and border officers now verify passenger eligibility digitally prior to boarding. Passengers who lack a valid eVisa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) risk being denied entry onto flights.

This update aligns with the Home Office's broader "Digital by Default" initiative aimed at creating a fully paperless border system. Immigration experts and legal advisors recommend that travelers ensure continuous access to the email address and phone number linked to their UKVI account, as multi-factor authentication codes may be required to log in while traveling abroad.
