The world’s largest video-sharing platform, YouTube, is introducing one of its most significant algorithm updates in recent years. Effective August 24, video views will be recorded the moment playback begins, starting from the very first frame.

Previously, platform rules required users to watch a video for at least 30 seconds for a view to register. Under the new guidelines, this minimum duration requirement is eliminated entirely. The new system applies to full-length long-form videos as well as live streams, where views will log immediately upon a user joining the broadcast.

This method has already been in place for YouTube Shorts since March 2025. Rival social networks TikTok and Instagram also calculate views from the instant playback begins, while platform X requires at least two seconds of watch time.

How Does This Impact Content Creators?

Industry analysts note that the revised rule will accelerate view growth - particularly for short-retention content—leading to higher overall audience reach figures. YouTube representatives confirmed that this operational update will not negatively affect creator earnings or eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

The platform previously tightened monetization entry requirements for prospective creators. Beginning next year, creators aiming to monetize content via ad revenue must accumulate at least 8,000 watch hours over the preceding 12 months or generate 20 million Shorts views within a 90-day window.
