Regular stair climbing can significantly increase life expectancy, scientists discover

Researchers from the University of East Anglia and Norwich have published surprising new study findings showing that regular daily stair climbing can noticeably boost life expectancy and lower the risk of premature death.
After analyzing data from nearly 480,000 individuals, the researchers found that people who regularly choose stairs over elevators have a 39% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.
Professor Vassilios Vassiliou from the Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia noted that cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death globally. However, he emphasized that these risks are largely preventable through a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, a heart-healthy diet, quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, and controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes.
The study involved participants ranging from 35 to 84 years old, comprising both healthy individuals and those with pre-existing heart conditions. The results demonstrated that individuals who frequently climb stairs are far less likely to develop severe cardiovascular issues such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.
The scientists highlighted that the primary advantage of this habit is how easily it can be integrated into daily routines at home, at work, or on the go, making it an ideal option for people with limited time or no access to a gym. Nevertheless, they warn that stair climbing may not be suitable for everyone, particularly individuals with mobility issues or joint problems.
