Popular Weight-Loss Method May Pose Health Risks, Scientists Warn
Photo Author: open source
The popularity of intermittent fasting as a modern key to weight management and biological rejuvenation has recently come under intense scientific scrutiny. Although social media figures promote time-restricted eating as an unrivaled solution for weight loss, cancer prevention, and longevity, current scientific consensus indicates these claims are vastly overblown. Researchers like neurologist Mark Mattson from Johns Hopkins University established that fasting triggers a metabolic shift from glucose to fat burning, stimulating cellular repair through autophagy. However, experts emphasize that these striking findings stem primarily from studies on genetically identical lab rodents under strict dietary controls, yielding far less dramatic results in humans.
Furthermore, Professor Krista Varady of the University of Illinois notes that intermittent fasting produces weight loss outcomes comparable to standard calorie restriction - averaging around 5%. Extreme fasting schedules may even prove counterproductive, causing muscle degradation, disrupted metabolism, and potential cardiovascular risks. Accurately studying human nutrition remains a major challenge because over 30% of study participants inaccurately report or omit their food consumption. To overcome this, scientists are testing advanced tracking tools, including smart forks, tooth-mounted sensors, and biological markers. Ultimately, intermittent fasting is merely one of many standard weight-loss strategies rather than a magical health panacea.
