One of the largest legal battles in social media history is on the horizon. Led by California and New York, 30 US states have filed a massive lawsuit against Meta, demanding over $1 trillion in damages and sweeping structural changes to its core algorithms. If the tech giant loses, platforms like Instagram and Facebook could be transformed beyond recognition.

State officials accuse Meta of exploiting young users and knowingly embedding addictive features that harm the mental health of children and teenagers. The lawsuit requests the total removal of public "like" counters, the elimination of endless scrolling, a ban on auto-playing videos, and restrictions on appearance-altering filters. Furthermore, authorities want to prohibit minors from creating multiple accounts and sharing disappearing posts, such as Instagram Stories.

These demands follow a recent ruling where a New Mexico court labeled Meta a "public nuisance" and imposed a $942 million fine. Internal documents and academic studies cited in court suggest that engagement metrics like "likes" foster toxic social comparison, worsening rates of youth depression, isolation, and body dissatisfaction.

Meta has consistently rejected the claims, maintaining that it prioritizes online safety for younger users. However, with 30 states representing nearly two-thirds of the US population backing this legal action, the outcome could redefine the future landscape of social media nationwide.
