World Cup 2026: Matches Could Last Up to 2.5 Hours Due to Extreme Weather

Some matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup could be extended to 2.5 hours due to extreme weather conditions in the United States, according to a report by The Touchline.
The source suggests that extreme heat, high humidity, and additional cooling breaks for players could significantly lengthen game times. However, the biggest factor is mandatory stoppages caused by lightning and thunderstorms. Similar situations were previously recorded during the FIFA Club World Cup held in the U.S.
During the first week of that tournament, four matches in the eastern regions were temporarily suspended due to weather. Safety breaks caused by storm and lightning threats lasted anywhere from 40 to 130 minutes.
Safety protocols in the United States are based on strict National Weather Service requirements. If lightning is detected within a 16-kilometer (10-mile) radius of the stadium, the game is automatically stopped. In such cases:
- Players and fans must leave open areas immediately.
- Everyone must seek shelter in indoor or underground sections of the stadium.
- This safety requirement is mandatory for all professional sports.
Experts warn that the hot and humid summer climates in states like Florida and Texas will likely impact the match schedules. Furthermore, climate change is expected to increase the frequency of thunderstorms during the tournament period.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
