Road Fatalities in Kazakhstan Decrease by 17%

Road accidents and related fatalities on international and national highways dropped noticeably during the first half of 2026, national operator QazAvtoJol reported in response to statements by the Dala Qyrandary public association. Official statistics indicate that 1,371 crashes occurred on major highways over the six-month period, resulting in 332 deaths and 2,587 injuries. Compared to the same timeframe in 2025, total collisions decreased by 9% (down from 1,507), fatalities fell by 17% (down from 401), and injuries dropped by 9% (down from 2,840).

Clarifying safety evaluations, QazAvtoJol emphasized that performance metrics should focus strictly on roads within its jurisdiction. The operator noted that previously circulated figures citing 807 deaths reflect nationwide totals across all roadways - including municipal streets and regional routes - making it inaccurate to attribute those broader figures solely to QazAvtoJol’s operations. The company stressed that incident analysis must consider combined factors like road conditions, weather, mechanical status, and driver actions, while Ministry of Internal Affairs data shows that driver errors- such as speeding, illegal overtaking, and improper maneuvering - account for 90% of traffic accidents nationwide.
