A devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck western Colombia, leaving at least 132 people dead and over 480 injured. In response to the crisis, national authorities have officially declared a state of emergency, reports BBC.
The quake originated in Chocó province at a depth of 103 kilometers, sending shockwaves across hundreds of miles. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and officials fear the death toll could climb as emergency crews work to reach individuals trapped under rubble.
The city of Pereira suffered severe destruction, reporting nearly 40 fatalities and more than 60 collapsed buildings, prompting local officials to institute a nighttime curfew. Additional casualties, structural damage, and regional airport disruptions were recorded in Cali, Manizales, Quibdó, and Medellín, with tremors felt in neighboring Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama.
Newly inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a national disaster, authorizing the immediate reallocation of government funds to aid response efforts and support affected families. International support, including aid offerings from the US, the European Union, and El Salvador, is being coordinated to assist with ongoing disaster relief.
