A new trend called “carspreading” has emerged in European cities due to the increasing size and weight of vehicles. While SUVs and large cars have grown in popularity, several cities are implementing measures to restrict them, reports BBC.

Paris raises parking fees for heavy vehicles

In October 2024, the Paris city government tripled parking fees for heavier vehicles. One-hour parking in the city center increased from 6 euros to 18 euros, and six-hour parking rose from 75 euros to 225 euros.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo stated that the decision aims to reduce air pollution and improve environmental conditions. According to the city administration, within a few months, the number of heavy vehicles parked on city streets decreased by two-thirds.

The UK also imposes restrictions

Following Paris’ example, several UK cities are taking steps to regulate large vehicles. Cardiff, for instance, increased the cost of parking permits for cars weighing over 2,400 kilograms. The city council highlighted that heavier vehicles:

* emit more harmful pollutants,
* damage roads more quickly,
* increase risk in traffic accidents.

Experts note that the share of SUVs in Europe has risen significantly over the past decade. In 2011, they accounted for 13% of the market; by 2025, this figure had grown to 59%.

Main issue in cities – lack of space

The growing size of cars is putting significant pressure on urban environments. Most of the 100 most popular models in the UK no longer fit into standard street parking spaces. Experts say narrow streets and limited parking demonstrate that large vehicles are not well-suited to city life.
