The U.S. authorities have announced a temporary suspension of immigrant visa issuance for citizens of several countries, including Kazakhstan, effective January 21, 2026. The U.S. State Department released this statement on January 14, according to Reuters.

This decision was initiated by the administration of Donald Trump. Alongside Kazakhstan, the list includes 75 nations, such as Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Belarus, Georgia, Iran, Russia, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan.

Which visas are affected?

This restriction does not affect tourist, student, or short-term visas. Additionally, visas for major sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup, will continue to be processed under the previous regulations. The decision applies only to immigrant visas, which grant the right to permanent residency in the United States.
Typically, those planning to move to the U.S. permanently must first obtain an immigrant visa before applying for a Green Card.

What is the reason for this decision?

The U.S. State Department explained that this measure aims to prevent foreign nationals from misusing social and government assistance programs.
According to Tommy Pigott, a spokesperson for the department, the U.S. is exercising its right to deny entry to individuals deemed ineligible for immigration, as such persons may become a "public charge," placing an undue burden on state resources and public services.

When will it be reinstated?

Washington stated that it is currently reviewing its immigrant visa processing procedures. However, no specific date has been provided for when the issuance of these visas will resume. According to official data, the restriction is intended to be temporary.

Consequently, while relocation procedures to the U.S. for Kazakhstanis are currently on hold, short-term travel visas remain available as usual.
