The U.S. administration is preparing to announce the formation of an international coalition this week dedicated to escorting vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. This development was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and Axios.

According to the WSJ, several nations have agreed to ensure maritime security in this strategically vital waterway. However, the specific timeline and operational details of the coalition remain under discussion. While some allies support launching the mission immediately amidst the current conflict, others prefer to wait until a ceasefire is established.

U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering the possibility of seizing Iran’s strategic Kharg Island if the blockade of the strait is not lifted. Notably, the U.S. conducted airstrikes on the island on March 13. In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump issued a warning to NATO members, stating that the future of the alliance would be "very bad" if they fail to assist the United States in operations against Iran.

Context: The Strait of Hormuz is the world's most important oil transit chokepoint. Due to the armed conflict between the U.S. and Iran, the corridor is currently closed, leading to a surge in global oil prices. While neighboring Iraq is already suffering from the consequences of the war, the Iranian leadership has declared it will not retreat from its position.
