On December 1, the United States assumed the G20 presidency, announcing that its agenda for the next year will focus on economic growth, energy security, and the development of new technologies, Reuters reports.

On Monday, the U.S. State Department outlined its key priorities, stating that Washington plans to implement “much-needed reforms” to return the G20 to its core mission of promoting economic growth and prosperity.

“We will prioritize three main areas:

  1. Boosting economic growth by reducing regulatory barriers,
  2. Expanding access to affordable and reliable energy supply chains,
  3. Advancing new technologies and innovation,” the department said.

This year, Washington did not attend the summit in South Africa, while next year’s summit will be held in Miami at a golf resort owned by Donald Trump. Trump said he does not intend to invite South Africa, accusing the country of refusing to properly hand over the presidency. His decision has sparked debate among some G20 members. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would try to persuade Trump to reconsider.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa stressed that his country remains a full and active member of the G20 and called Trump’s accusations “false information.”

At this year’s summit, G20 leaders adopted a declaration addressing the climate crisis, global economic issues, and trade. Under the U.S. presidency, Washington plans to pursue reforms in economic growth, energy, and technology.
