Delhi, India – Children in India’s capital are facing serious health risks due to rising air pollution, with pediatric clinics reporting a sharp increase in patients suffering from coughing, choking, and breathing difficulties, according to the BBC.

Over the past month, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has hovered between 300 and 400, more than 20 times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended limit. Doctors warn that children and the elderly are the most vulnerable, and exposure can negatively affect children’s immune systems and lung development.

The government has implemented measures to reduce pollution, including halting construction, restricting polluting vehicles, and occasionally attempting artificial rain. Parents are being forced to limit outdoor activities for children and require the use of N95 masks.

Children from working-class families, especially those living in cramped conditions, are particularly at risk. Medical professionals advise keeping children indoors, ensuring proper hydration, wearing protective masks, and monitoring children with weaker immune systems.

The air pollution problem is not limited to Delhi; northern India is experiencing similar challenges, raising long-term health concerns for children across the region.
