On May 6, 2026, a passenger airliner belonging to Swiss International Air Lines issued a distress signal while in Kazakhstan's airspace and made an emergency landing at Almaty International Airport.

The aircraft involved was an Airbus A350 operating flight LX123 from Seoul to Zurich. The plane had departed from Incheon International Airport approximately six hours before the incident. At the time the distress signal was issued, the aircraft was at a cruising altitude of about 11,000 meters.

The crew of flight LX123 activated emergency code 7700 while the liner was in the vicinity of Lake Balkhash. After signaling the emergency, the captain decided to change course, and the flight was promptly diverted to Almaty International Airport. According to the latest reports from Kazakhstani media, the plane landed safely at approximately 12:50 PM local time and taxied to the parking stand under its own power. The General Transport Prosecutor's Office of Kazakhstan confirmed the successful landing. There were no casualties or injuries.

As of the time of publication, neither SWISS nor the Kazakhstani aviation authorities have provided official comments regarding the reasons for the distress signal.

The incident will be investigated by the aviation authorities of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the Swiss side. For comparison, SWISS has encountered similar situations previously; specifically, one of its flights made an emergency landing in Baku due to a passenger's health deteriorating sharply on board.
