A 31-year-old California resident made his first court appearance in Washington on April 27, charged with the attempted assassination of U.S. President Donald Trump. The incident occurred on the evening of April 25 during the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner at the Washington Hilton.

The defendant, identified as Cole Thomas Allen, faces three federal charges: attempted assassination of the President, interstate transportation of firearms with intent to commit a felony, and use of a weapon during a violent crime. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the assassination charge carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The court ordered Allen to be detained without bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 30.

Background and Premeditation: Allen, a former mechanical engineer and video game developer, was recently recognized as "Teacher of the Month" (December 2024) at C2 Education. According to FBI findings, the attack was highly premeditated:

  • Allen booked a room at the Washington Hilton on April 6, shortly after the President confirmed his attendance.

  • He traveled across the country from California by train, arriving in D.C. just before the event.

While approximately 2,000 guests were in the ballroom, Allen breached the security perimeter armed with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun, 38 caliber pistol, and three knives. During the confrontation, a Secret Service officer was struck in his ballistic vest. President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Cabinet members were immediately evacuated from the venue. Security officials recovered multiple weapons and hazardous items from the suspect at the scene.
