The European Commission has announced that all passwords worldwide are at risk of being cracked due to the rapid development of supercomputers, particularly quantum technologies.

According to a report by Bild, Henna Virkkunen, the Commissioner for European Technological Sovereignty and Data Security, warned that current defense systems could lose their effectiveness in just four years. The primary threat stems from quantum computers, which are capable of breaking today’s most complex encryption systems within seconds.

The implications of this threat are severe, as the following could be left completely unprotected:

  • Private messages in messaging apps
  • Banking and financial data
  • Corporate information
  • Classified government documents

European Union experts suggest that the only effective response to this cyber threat is the implementation of post-quantum cryptography. According to the EU roadmap, there are plans to migrate all strategically important systems to next-generation encryption methods by 2030.
However, the specific timing and scale of this technological transition will be decided independently by each member state.
