According to Bloomberg, an international arbitration tribunal in London has ordered the operators of the Karachaganak oil and gas field to pay Kazakhstan between $2 billion and $4 billion in compensation. This decision is being hailed as one of the most significant legal victories for the country in its oil and gas sector.

The arbitration proceedings were conducted under the rules of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. The tribunal fully upheld the Kazakh government's position, ruling that the operators must return funds related to unapproved cost overruns and other non-recoverable expenses under the existing Production Sharing Agreement (PSA). Although Kazakhstan initially sought more than $6 billion, the final awarded amount represents a substantial windfall for the national treasury.

The Karachaganak project involves major global players, including Eni, Shell, Chevron, Lukoil, and the national company KazMunayGas. The court dismissed the international majors' arguments regarding the statute of limitations. The multi-billion dollar compensation is expected to be repaid over time through adjustments to the oil distribution formula.

Currently, the exact final sum is being finalized, and the parties retain the right to appeal the decision.
