A team of international researchers has scientifically proven the high efficacy of Nordic walking in combating depressive conditions. The results of the new study highlight that physical activity is a crucial tool in restoring the quality of life for patients.

The study involved 64 people diagnosed with moderate to severe depression who had not previously exercised regularly. Divided into a control group and an experimental group, participants engaged in Nordic walking under the guidance of a professional instructor twice a week for 10 weeks. During the sessions, moderate exercise intensity was monitored using special heart rate monitors. Progress was evaluated using the international Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II).

Scientists discovered that supervised physical exercise significantly reduces symptoms of depression. Participants suffering from severe forms of the condition showed improvements as early as the first five weeks. Following the 10-week course, 53.6% of the group practicing Nordic walking achieved remission, with clinical symptoms of depression subsiding.

According to the researchers, Nordic walking is an accessible, simple, and effective method for coping with depression. These results align with previous concepts from American scientists describing depression as a disruption of brain dynamics: physical activity helps the brain return to its normal functional state and break free from negative patterns.

These findings confirm the viability of integrating Nordic walking into medical rehabilitation programs as a form of adjunctive therapy.
