A fatal case of the Nipah virus has been recorded near the Indian city of Kolkata, sparking global concern. According to official data from India, as of late January, two cases of infection were confirmed among healthcare workers who fell ill at the end of December last year. One victim began showing symptoms on January 21 and passed away a week later. Her infection with the virus was confirmed the following day. It is reported that she had not traveled recently but had consumed raw date palm sap.

Asian countries, including Vietnam, Singapore, and Indonesia, have reported intensified sanitary and epidemiological surveillance measures. The World Health Organization (WHO) has named the Nipah virus one of the most dangerous in the world, as no drugs or vaccines currently exist.

The Situation in Kazakhstan

No cases of the virus have been detected in Kazakhstan. Media reports indicate that inspections have begun at all border crossing points. Authorities are primarily checking passengers arriving from countries with unfavorable epidemiological situations regarding this infection, including India.

Kazakhstani podcaster and blogger Marina Sharipova shared on her blog that her planned vacation "under the palms" with her mother was canceled due to the active Nipah virus outbreak. Instead, she chose to vacation near Almaty.

Transmission and Prevention

Raw date palm sap is considered one of the primary transmission routes for the virus, as it is often contaminated by infected fruit bats.

For those traveling to South Asian countries, experts advise:

  • Check the epidemiological situation in advance.
  • Avoid contact with bats and sick animals.
  • Do not consume raw or unpasteurized products, especially fresh juices and unpeeled fruits.
  • Wear long-sleeved clothing.
  • Maintain strict personal hygiene.
