At the Regional Environmental Summit held in Astana, the leaders of Central Asian states took a historic step that has garnered international attention. In a move to redefine the region's approach to its most pressing ecological crisis, March 26 has been officially designated as the International Day of the Aral Sea and the Amu Darya and Syr Darya Rivers. This designation marks a new strategic phase in the efforts to revive the endangered sea and its surrounding ecosystems.

Once the world's fourth-largest inland lake, the Aral Sea has become a global symbol of environmental fragility. The current statistics highlight the urgency of the situation:

• Loss of Surface Area: More than 90% of the sea has disappeared.

• The Aral Kum Desert: A new desert covering 5.4 million hectares has formed on the former seabed.

• Toxic Proliferation: Toxic salts and dust from the seabed are now being detected as far as the glaciers of the Tien Shan and Pamir mountains, accelerating their melting and proving the global nature of the threat.

The summit served as a platform for concrete regional diplomacy and administrative transitions:

• Leadership Transition: Kazakhstan concluded its chairmanship of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), with a new head elected to lead the organization.

• Unified Position: For the first time, regional nations reached a consensus on water allocation and climate adaptation strategies.

• The "Green Shield" Initiative: Plans were solidified for large-scale saxaul planting on the dry seabed to suppress dust storms.

• Technological Modernization: The summit emphasized the integration of digital water-saving technologies and increased investment in the healthcare of the Aral Sea region’s inhabitants.

The primary objective of establishing the March 26 international date is to move beyond ceremonial conferences. The initiative aims to transform this day into an annual accountability mechanism, where governments provide transparent reports on every cubic meter of water saved and the tangible progress made in restoring the region’s ecological balance.

The "Astana Declaration" underscores that the survival of the Aral Sea is inseparable from the stability and prosperity of all Central Asian nations.
