A shift has occurred in Kazakhstan’s mortality statistics, with neurological diseases now claiming more lives than cancer. The Bureau of National Statistics has released its demographic report for 2025, detailing the primary causes of death across the nation.

According to the data, diseases of the circulatory system remain the leading cause of death, accounting for 22.5% of all cases. However, neurological diseases have unexpectedly climbed to second place, representing 17.8% of deaths.

Historically considered a primary threat, cancer (malignant neoplasms) has dropped to third place, accounting for 10.4% of recorded deaths.

Despite these health challenges, the population of Kazakhstan grew by 200,300 people due to natural increase. This figure is the result of:

• Births: 335,000

• Deaths: 134,700

A critical concern remains the child mortality rate, with 2,715 children under the age of five passing away during the reported year.

Experts suggest that the rise in neurological disorders may be attributed to chronic stress, increasing psychological burdens, and shifting lifestyle patterns. These statistical findings highlight an urgent need for the healthcare sector to strengthen preventative measures and prioritize the psycho-emotional well-being of the population.
