Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has issued a stern warning to Iran following an incident involving a missile directed toward the country’s airspace.

According to the Turkish Ministry of National Defense, the ballistic missile was launched from Iranian territory and traveled through Iraqi and Syrian airspace toward Turkey. The missile was successfully intercepted and shot down by Turkish air defense systems before reaching its target.

"During these challenging times for our region, we will never leave the security of our borders and airspace to chance. As demonstrated by today's event, we remain in close coordination with our NATO allies, taking all necessary measures and acting swiftly. We are delivering our warnings as clearly as possible to ensure such situations do not recur," Erdogan stated.

The Turkish Ministry of Defense declared that the country reserves the right to respond to any hostile actions. At the same time, Ankara called for a de-escalation of steps that could further inflame regional tensions.

The Ministry confirmed that Turkey will continue to consult with NATO and other international allies regarding the situation. Turkish media outlets report that the likely target of the missile was the Incirlik Air Base, a strategic NATO facility where U.S. nuclear aviation bombs are reportedly stored.

Turkish television channels have already broadcasted footage showing the first recovered fragments of the intercepted Iranian missile
