In recent weeks, Meta has deleted or restricted access to dozens of accounts associated with LGBT organizations, reproductive health issues, and abortion, according to The Guardian, citing data from public and human rights organizations.

According to the NGO Repro Uncensored, more than 50 organizations across Europe, the UK, countries in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East have faced restrictions since October. Hotline accounts addressing abortion issues were among those blocked, including in countries where abortion is legally permitted. Queer- and sex-positive community accounts were also affected. In some cases, posts containing non-explicit depictions of nudity, including artworks, were flagged or restricted.

Experts report that in 2025, over 200 cases of account deletion or severe restriction were recorded—more than double the number from the previous year. This represents one of the largest waves of moderation in recent years.

Meta stated that the rules apply equally to all users and that moderation measures are not related to the subject matter or positions of the organizations. The company also noted that some accounts have been restored, and a few restrictions were acknowledged as mistakes.

Organizations affected by the restrictions have raised concerns about the lack of transparency in decision-making and the complexity of the appeals process. They argue that these blocks hinder users’ access to information about health and human rights.

Digital rights experts emphasize that the situation fuels the ongoing discussion about the role of major IT platforms and how to balance content moderation with freedom of expression online.
