On Monday, a massive pileup involving more than 100 vehicles occurred in Michigan as a powerful snowstorm fueled by the Great Lakes blanketed the state, according to apnews.

The scale of the accident forced Michigan State Police to close both directions of Interstate 196, southwest of Grand Rapids. Emergency crews worked to clear the scene, which included more than 30 semi-trailer trucks. While police reported numerous injuries, fortunately, no fatalities have been confirmed.

One of the drivers, Pedro Mata Jr., shared that he was traveling at about 20-25 mph (32-40 km/h) before the crash, but visibility was near zero due to the heavy snow. Although he managed to stop his pickup truck safely, he decided to pull off into the median to avoid being hit from behind.

"It was a little scary just listening to everything—the bangs and booms behind you. I saw what was in front of me, but I couldn’t see exactly what was happening behind me," Mata said.

This accident is just one consequence of a massive winter storm moving across the country. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for extreme cold and blizzard conditions stretching from Minnesota through Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. A day earlier, snow even reached as far south as Florida, and freezing conditions disrupted professional football games in Massachusetts and Chicago.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office reported multiple vehicles sliding off the road and jack-knifed semis blocking traffic. Stranded motorists were transported by bus to Hudsonville High School, where they could seek warmth and arrange for transportation.

Cleanup operations lasted several hours. Despite the brutal cold, recovery companies like Grand Valley Towing deployed dozens of specialized vehicles to clear the wreckage and reopen the highway as quickly as possible.
