Once considered a destination accessible only to the wealthy, the Maldives is now becoming more affordable for a wider audience as the country shifts toward local and sustainable tourism, BBC reports.

Government reforms have allowed hotels to open on inhabited islands, lifting the previous restrictions that limited tourism to expensive resort islands. Today, more than 1,200 guesthouses operate across 90 islands, enabling tourists to experience local life while allowing families to earn direct income from tourism.

Thoddoo Island, known as the Maldives’ “farmer island,” is one such destination. It can be reached by public ferry and is known for its quiet streets suitable for motorcycles and bicycles, local cuisine, and genuine hospitality. According to Ahmed Karam, owner of the Serene Sky Guesthouse, this tourism model not only benefits residents but also promotes environmental protection. Visitors can swim with sea turtles and enjoy produce grown by local farmers.

Resorts like Sun Siyam Olhuveli also offer mid-range, sustainable tourism options. With villas, beachfront pools, family-friendly services, and various excursions, these resorts provide a comfortable and safe holiday experience. They also reduce plastic use and allow guests to participate in coral planting and beach cleanup activities.

According to Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, “a clean environment is our most important asset.” The Maldives is now transforming from an exclusive luxury destination into an accessible paradise where families and travelers can experience authentic local culture and natural beauty.
