According to ABC News, approximately 15,000 New York nurses went on strike on January 12, demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. This is recognized as the largest protest by nurses in the city’s history.

According to the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA), staff at four major hospitals in the metropolis stopped working after the union and hospital representatives failed to reach a preliminary agreement. The nurses are demanding pay raises, full medical insurance, pension coverage, and protection from workplace violence. The previous contract, signed after a 2023 strike, expired on December 31.

"Unfortunately, greedy hospital executives have chosen to put profits above safe patient care and forced nurses out on strike, even though we would rather be at our patients' bedsides," stated NYSNA President Nancy Hagans.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in connection with the strike and urged both parties to reach a mutual agreement as soon as possible. Several officials, including State Attorney General Letitia James, expressed their support for the nurses.

"Nurses risk their lives every day to protect the health of New Yorkers. They should never be forced to choose between their own safety, the well-being of patients, and a fair contract. I call on hospitals across the city to put patients before profit," said Letitia James.

Hospital representatives stated that they are prepared to continue providing medical care despite potential disruptions. They also advised patients not to avoid or delay seeking help in case of medical emergencies.
