Kazakhstan Enters Top 20 Global Education Systems

Kazakhstan has secured the 18th position in the Insider Global Education Index, earning a score of 0.092. This placement marks a significant milestone in the country's systemic transformation and its growing influence within the global academic landscape.

By breaking into the top 20, Kazakhstan has surpassed several established economies, including:

• Poland (19th)

• United Arab Emirates (20th)

• Mexico, Brazil, and South Africa

The country is now competing closely with the Netherlands (17th) and Saudi Arabia (16th), both of which are known for rapidly expanding their academic and scientific infrastructures. The ranking remains led by the United States, followed by the United Kingdom and China.

The Insider Global Education Index evaluates systems based on three core pillars:

1. QS Top 1000 Representation: The number of universities featured in the global rankings.

2. Average Institutional Ranking: The median position of the country's top universities.

3. Public Investment: The level of state funding allocated to the education sector.

Currently, over 10 Kazakhstani universities are featured in the QS Top 1000, with prominent institutions such as Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, and Satbayev University holding positions within the 300–800 range.

Government funding for education has remained stable at 3–4% of GDP, providing a predictable environment for large-scale reforms. This financial backing supports international partnerships, academic mobility, and stronger ties between universities and the industrial sector.

Additionally, academic prestige was further bolstered by Nazarbayev University, which recently broke into the top 200 world universities for education according to the Times Higher Education 2025 subject rankings.

The Minister of Science and Higher Education, Sayasat Nurbek, characterized the results as a clear indicator of successful systemic changes. He emphasized that this achievement is a direct result of both the improving international competitiveness of Kazakhstani universities and consistent state support for the sector.
