The Iranian government has officially declared three days of national mourning following a wave of violent protests that has swept across the country. According to reports from The Times of Israel, the mourning period is dedicated to security personnel killed during what the government describes as "foreign-orchestrated riots." President Masoud Pezeshkian has characterized the unrest as a provocation by the United States and Israel, calling on citizens to join a "resistance march" to condemn the violence, which officials blame on "urban terrorist criminals."

The crisis began on December 29, 2025, sparked by a dramatic collapse of the Iranian Rial. Initial protests by merchants in Tehran quickly escalated as students joined the movement the following day. By early January 2026, the unrest had spread to 111 cities across all provinces, leading to intense clashes between security forces and armed groups. The violence peaked on January 8, resulting in significant infrastructure damage in the capital, including the burning of mosques, banks, and dozens of emergency vehicles.

While official state figures remain vague, the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reports a heavy toll: 490 protesters and 48 security officers have lost their lives, with approximately 10,000 people detained. In response to the escalation, the international community is weighing its options. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu have held discussions regarding potential countermeasures. According to The Wall Street Journal, the US is considering a range of actions, including additional economic sanctions, cyber interventions to support activists, and the possibility of targeted military strikes. In turn, Tehran has issued a stern warning, threatening to strike US and Israeli military bases if the country is attacked.
