The situation in the Land of the Rising Sun has grown dire as relentless, record-breaking snowfalls have battered the country over recent weeks. According to official data, the natural disaster has claimed 46 lives, with an additional 558 people sustaining various injuries. Qrnews reports on the catastrophe, citing materials from Bild.

The anomalous snowfall, which began in late January, has created massive drifts across northern Japan. In several settlements, snow depth has exceeded one meter, while mountainous regions have recorded accumulations as high as 4.5 meters (nearly 15 feet).

Japanese authorities identify the primary causes of fatalities as follows:

  • Roof Collapses: Massive layers of snow sliding off buildings and burying pedestrians.
  • Structural Failures: Residential homes collapsing under the sheer weight of the snow.
  • Emergency Delays: Streets and highways becoming so impassable that medical and rescue teams could not reach victims in time.

Media reports indicate a grim reality: some bodies lay undiscovered beneath the snow for several days due to the extreme conditions.

The cities of Aomori and Ajigasawa remain in a critical state. Aomori Governor Soichiro Miyashita admitted that the city administration is no longer able to clear streets, railways, and residential areas on its own.

In response, the Governor requested emergency assistance from the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) in early February. Soldiers are currently deployed in the disaster zones, focusing their efforts on clearing the homes of the elderly and disabled, as well as restoring strategic infrastructure.

Experts warn that precipitation is expected to continue in the northern parts of the country, further elevating the risk of avalanches and additional structural collapses.
