The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has released the latest data regarding an epidemiological emergency on a cruise liner, where 11 cases of a dangerous hantavirus strain have been recorded. The outbreak originated on the Dutch vessel MV Hondius during its voyage from Argentina to Cape Verde. To date, there are nine laboratory-confirmed cases and two suspected cases under investigation, with three fatalities reported among citizens of the Netherlands and Germany. Laboratory findings confirm that the infections are caused by the Andes hantavirus.

In response, the WHO chief announced that all infected individuals and crew members have been placed under strict medical isolation to prevent further transmission. While the primary outbreak is contained to the vessel, isolated cases linked to the event have already been registered in Switzerland, Israel, France, and the United States.

The Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan is actively monitoring the situation and has stated that there is no immediate threat of a mass outbreak within the country. National sanitary and epidemiological services have confirmed that they have rigorous protocols in place to identify and counter any potential imported infections. Experts emphasize that while this hantavirus strain is typically transmitted via rodents, rare person-to-person transmission can occur through close contact. Despite growing concerns, the WHO has dismissed rumors of a new pandemic as groundless, maintaining that the current situation is fully under control.
