On the night of March 27 to March 28, 2026, a heart transplant was successfully performed on a teenager for the first time in the history of Kazakhstan’s medicine, reports heartcenter.umc. This event has opened a new chapter in the systematic development of pediatric transplantology in the country.

The 15-year-old patient had suffered from a severe heart condition since the age of 10. The donor was a 43-year-old man who had been diagnosed with brain death. Following the confirmation of the diagnosis, his relatives granted official consent for posthumous organ donation. Thanks to this noble decision and the coordinated efforts of the transplantation team, the teenager was given a second chance at life. Currently, the patient is in satisfactory condition and has been transferred from the intensive care unit to the relevant post-operative department.

Minister of Healthcare Akmaral Alnazarova personally visited the patient and his mother after the surgery to check on the boy’s condition. The Minister expressed her support to the family and thanked the medical team for successfully performing this high-tech operation.

As of today, 123 minors are on the waiting list for various organ transplants in Kazakhstan, including 9 children who specifically require a heart transplant.

Pediatric heart transplants are performed in only a limited number of countries worldwide (with 80% of these procedures occurring in U.S. clinics). The success of such a complex surgery in Kazakhstan confirms that the country possesses the necessary medical infrastructure and expertise to provide high-tech medical assistance to children.
