Parliamentary elections and a nationwide referendum on political reforms concluded in the People's Republic of Bangladesh on Thursday. This marks the first free and fair voting process since the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, whose administration was long characterized by an increasingly authoritarian system of governance.

Following the massive popular unrest led by "Generation Z" in 2024, this election has been recorded as the most competitive campaign in the nation's history. Approximately 50 political parties and more than 2,000 candidates vied for positions.

The primary political battle took place between the following coalitions:

  • Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP): A coalition led by Tarique Rahman (currently leading in preliminary forecasts).
  • Islamic Union: A political force led by Shafiqur Rahman.

Notably, the former ruling party - the Awami League—did not participate in the election, as its activities have been banned since May of last year.

In addition to the parliamentary vote, the citizens of this nation of 175 million voted on a package of reforms aimed at fundamentally transforming the state system. The proposed political changes include:

  • Term Limits for the Prime Minister: A strict ban on any single individual holding the office for more than two terms.
  • Judicial Independence: Complete isolation of the judiciary from the executive branch.
  • Neutral Caretaker Government: The appointment of a neutral interim government during election periods to ensure fairness.
  • Bicameral Parliament: The establishment of an upper house within the legislative body.

The vote-counting process is currently underway. Preliminary data from Dhaka and other major regions indicate that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) holds a significant lead. International experts are hailing this election as a rebirth of democratic institutions in Bangladesh and a triumph for the political activism of the country's youth.
