A devastating explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has resulted in the deaths of at least 23 people and left six others with varying degrees of injuries, according to reports from India TV.

The incident occurred at the "Vanaja" private enterprise located in Kattanarpatti village, within the Virudhunagar district. Official data indicates that over 100 employees were on the premises at the time of the blast, with approximately 30 workers positioned directly at the epicenter of the detonation.

The force of the explosion completely demolished three production units and caused significant structural damage to several adjacent buildings. Rescue operations have been severely hampered by the continuous detonation of pyrotechnic materials trapped beneath the debris. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that more individuals remains trapped under the rubble.

The six injured victims were transported to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College, where four are reported to be in critical condition. Among the casualties are women who sustained severe burns covering more than 60% of their bodies.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the facility held a valid license from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). A specialized commission is currently investigating whether there was a breach of safety protocols or a failure in the technological production process.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his official condolences to the families of the victims. This tragedy marks the second major industrial accident recorded in the region within the span of just a few days.
