On December 2, official negotiations between Kazakhstan and the European Union on simplifying the visa regime and a readmission agreement will begin in Brussels, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan reported.

The negotiations were endorsed by Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas during the 22nd session of the Kazakhstan–EU Cooperation Council. The Ministry notes that the upcoming changes will significantly enhance the mobility of Kazakh citizens.

According to the Ministry, the forthcoming agreement will create simpler conditions for Kazakh citizens traveling to EU countries.

“This step will make a significant contribution to strengthening humanitarian ties, expanding opportunities for students, scientists, and professionals, and increasing citizen mobility,” the MFA said.

Once the agreement comes into force, Kazakh citizens are expected to benefit from shorter visa processing times, a reduced list of required documents, and lower administrative fees.

During the session, the parties also discussed the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. Considering changes in global supply chains, the EU and Kazakhstan confirmed the strategic importance of the “Middle Corridor” as a reliable trade route between Europe and Asia. Kazakhstan expressed its readiness to strengthen cooperation with the EU and regional partners.

According to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), at the Tashkent Investors Forum, an agreement was signed for the EU to provide a €10 million grant to the Port of Aktau. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development will also allocate $35 million for port development. Funds will be used to reconstruct and extend two berths and purchase weather-resistant cranes, which will increase container handling capacity.

In 2024, trade turnover between Kazakhstan and the EU reached nearly $50 billion, with European investment inflows totaling $200 billion. Over 4,000 companies with European capital are currently operating in the country.
