On Monday, March 16, one of the world’s most critical transportation hubs, Dubai International Airport (DXB), was forced to suspend all operations following a devastating drone attack that sparked a massive fire. According to reports from Reuters and DW.com, the drone strike targeted a strategic fuel storage tank near the airport perimeter.

In response, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority halted all flights indefinitely to ensure the safety of passengers and staff, while Emirates Airline cancelled all scheduled arrivals and departures. Currently, numerous flights are being diverted to Al Maktoum International Airport, and police have cordoned off all major roads and tunnels leading to the facility.

This incident marks the third major drone strike on the airport since hostilities involving Iran began on February 28. The ongoing war between the U.S.-Israel alliance and Iran has plunged international aviation into a state of chaos. With much of the Middle Eastern airspace closed due to the persistent threat of missile and drone salvos, flight cancellations and skyrocketing fuel prices have become the new reality. The UAE Ministry of Defense stated that while their air defense systems have intercepted over 1,500 Iranian drones and nearly 300 missiles since the conflict’s inception, the escalating violence has already claimed six lives, including four civilians.

The situation reached a breaking point following massive airstrikes by the U.S. and Israel on Iran, which resulted in the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking Iranian officials. In retaliation, Tehran has not only targeted Israel and Gulf territories but has also declared a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz - a vital maritime passage for one-fifth of the world’s oil trade. Recent reports of Iran mining the Strait and the subsequent destruction of 16 mine-laying vessels by U.S. forces have further destabilized global markets and raised urgent concerns over international energy security.
