Civic activists in Almaty have proposed renaming one of the metropolis's major thoroughfares—Rozybakiyev Street—after the prominent poet and public figure Mukhtar Shakhanov. The formal initiative was published on the Gosrating open petition portal.

According to the authors of the petition, immortalizing Mukhtar Shakhanov’s name on the map of Almaty is a symbol of historical justice. The document emphasizes that the poet spent the vast majority of his conscious life in Almaty, highlighting his exceptional contributions to the protection of national interests and the development of the state language.

"It is our duty to pay tribute to the spirit of a figure who defended the honor of his people, the Kazakh language, and our sovereignty during the decisive turning points of history," the official appeal states.

The initiators of the proposal link the choice of this specific street to the social significance of Mukhtar Shakhanov’s legacy. Rozybakiyev Street is considered one of Almaty’s longest transportation arteries, stretching approximately 7 kilometers. It traverses the Bostandyk and Almaly districts, passing by major educational institutions (such as AlmaU) and key public landmarks, including the First President’s Foundation sports complex and the MEGA Alma-Ata shopping center.

Alternative Commemoration for Abdulla Rozybakiyev

Simultaneously, activists suggest continuing the commemoration of Abdulla Rozybakiyev in a different format. Specifically, they propose renaming objects directly related to his biography, installing memorial plaques, or preserving his bust within the Alley of Eminent Figures.

Current Status

The voting process for the petition is currently ongoing. According to the latest data, more than 260 citizens have supported the initiative, while approximately 70 individuals have expressed their opposition.

It is worth noting that the poet Mukhtar Shakhanov passed away on April 19, 2026, and was laid to rest in the village of Qogham in the Turkistan region.
