US to Check Social Media Accounts of Foreign Tourists

The US administration plans to require all foreign tourists entering the country to provide a history of their social media accounts used over the past five years, NBC News reports.

According to the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), this requirement will apply to all travelers entering the United States, even citizens of countries that are eligible for visa-free travel, such as the United Kingdom or Germany.

CBP stated that this information is necessary to determine whether travelers pose a security threat. In addition, tourists will be asked to provide information about their family members.

In June 2025, the US State Department introduced a rule requiring some visa applicants to make their social media profiles public. This change sparked criticism from international organizations and human rights groups. The Electronic Frontier Foundation described the measure as unprecedented, calling it a restriction on the online activities of foreign students and migrants.

In recent years, the US has imposed full or partial bans on entry for citizens of several countries due to security concerns. Experts believe that the social media screening system will further strengthen such monitoring measures.
