In a major strategic realignment, Microsoft is offering voluntary buyout packages to nearly 60,000 employees - roughly a quarter of its global workforce - to redirect capital toward its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence operations.

The voluntary exit program targets mid-level personnel below the vice president rank across key regions, including the U.S., the UK, India, and Canada. Workers who opt in will receive financial compensation packages alongside career transition support. However, staff in critical high-growth areas, such as data center operations, as well as sales and marketing teams, are excluded from the offer.

The cost-cutting drive aligns with massive capital expenditure plans. Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood confirmed that Microsoft is set to channel $175 billion into AI infrastructure and data center developments in 2026 alone, offsetting labor expenses to fund next-generation AI development.

This initiative represents the company’s second voluntary buyout scheme this year. Microsoft previously rolled out a voluntary package for nearly 8,750 U.S. workers in May, followed by a targeted layoff of 4,800 roles in July - primarily impacting its Xbox gaming division. Corporate disclosures show the company’s head-count stood at 223,000 by late June.
