The US government has drastically tightened its policy regarding foreign nationals, implementing measures of unprecedented scale. Since the start of Donald Trump's second presidential term, the US Department of State reported that it has revoked more than 300,000 visas, signaling a sharp acceleration in recent weeks.

While the figure stood at approximately 175,000 between January and August, it has nearly doubled in a short period. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated that the Trump administration is revoking visas faster and in greater numbers than any other administration in US history.

"There is zero tolerance for foreign nationals on visas who break the law, commit fraud, or undermine national security," Tommy Pigott asserted.

Grounds for Revocation: Law Violations or Social Media Comments?

Those targeted extend beyond individuals committing traditional offenses:

  • Pro-Palestinian Protestors: Foreign nationals participating in demonstrations against Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip.

  • Social Media Users: Non-US citizens who posted online comments regarding the 2025 killing of conservative activist and Trump supporter Charlie Kirk.

In addition, social media screening procedures have been heavily intensified for both visa applicants and foreign residents currently inside the country.

The White House maintains that these rigorous border and immigration controls are essential for fortifying domestic security.

Human rights advocates, however, are raising alarms. They argue that these measures violate due process rights and free speech, creating an atmosphere of fear - particularly among ethnic minorities. Rights organizations contend that the government is citing national security concerns as a pretext to target political critics and using isolated fraud incidents to justify widespread crackdowns on immigrant communities.
