The Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan has placed the epidemiological situation under strict control following reports of a potential highly dangerous infection in Russia's Irkutsk region. According to preliminary assessments by the ministry, the risk of the infection being imported into Kazakhstan remains low, and no cases of plague have been confirmed in Russia to date.

The concern arose following the death of a 28-year-old woman in Shelekhov. Media reports indicate that she was an employee at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute. Hospitalized on September 29, she passed away two days later, prompting an epidemiological investigation into a possible highly dangerous pathogen.

Health authorities placed 197 individuals who had contact with the deceased under medical observation. According to the Kazakh Ministry of Health, none of the contact persons have exhibited symptoms, and all laboratory test results have returned negative.

On October 4, Rospotrebnadzor reported that the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the Irkutsk region, including Irkutsk and Shelekhov, remains stable with no plague cases detected. The cause of the woman's death is currently listed as pneumonia of undetermined origin. An exact diagnosis has yet to be established, and the source of infection and surrounding circumstances are still being investigated.

In response, Kazakhstan has implemented preventive measures, including rigorous sanitary and quarantine checks at state border crossing points. The Ministry of Health noted that no individuals with elevated body temperatures, symptoms of illness, or suspected dangerous infections have been detected across any transportation modes.

Health authorities advise anyone experiencing symptoms after traveling abroad to seek immediate medical attention and inform doctors about their travel history and dates.
