Trump's Latest Controversy: The U.S. Erases a Canadian Name From the Map

U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an executive order officially renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America," according to a White House press statement. When pressed by reporters on what signal this move sends to Ottawa, Trump offered a brief response: "None."

Straddling the border between the U.S. and Canada, the 19,000-square-kilometer body of water ranks among North America's Great Lakes, with its northern bank belonging to Canada and its southern shore touching New York State. Under international law, the executive order carries legal weight exclusively within American jurisdiction and official government documents.

Analysts view the unilateral renaming as a response to deteriorating trade talks and tariff disputes between Washington and Ottawa. Trump had previously hinted at the move on Truth Social, arguing that since the U.S. no longer intends to pursue active trade relations with the Canadian province of Ontario, the shared lake's name should reflect that shift.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney strongly condemned the directive, emphasizing that the Huron indigenous people bestowed the name over four centuries ago and asserting that it will "always remain Ontario" to Canadians.

This is not the first time the administration has used map labels as leverage; Washington previously ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be designated as the "Gulf of America" amid broader trade and foreign policy standoffs.
